1 cup flour 1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt 3 tbsp shortening
  1.3 cup milk

Make a soft dough of the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, shortening and milk.  Pat to about 6mm thickness on floured board.  Cut in squares.  Place 3 quarters of apple in centre of each square.  Sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon, and dot wit a teaspoon of margarine or butter.  Fold dough over the apples and seal.  In a 23cm square pan put 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon butter and 1/2 cup water.  Place dumplings in the syrup and bake for 30 minutes at 180C.  Baste with syrup occasionally and serve warm.
